Not all rooms need the same schedule
Regular tidying keeps a home looking presentable, but it’s not the same as a deep clean, and the right frequency for a proper deep clean actually varies quite a bit room by room rather than following one blanket rule for the whole house.
Kitchen
Kitchens generally benefit from a deep clean monthly, given how much daily use they get. This means the inside of the oven, behind and under appliances where crumbs and grease genuinely accumulate, inside the fridge including door seals, and range hood filters, which build up grease faster than most people expect even with regular wiping of visible surfaces.
Bathroom
Bathrooms sit at a similar monthly frequency, mainly because of moisture. Grout and silicone sealant around showers and baths need regular attention to prevent mould taking hold, and exhaust fans collect dust that reduces their effectiveness at managing that moisture if left too long between cleans, which can actually make the mould problem worse over time.
Bedroom
Bedrooms can generally go longer between deep cleans, every two to three months is reasonable for most households, but mattress cleaning deserves more frequent attention than people usually give it. Dust mites and allergens accumulate in mattresses regardless of how clean the room around them looks, and a proper clean every few months, alongside regular airing, makes a genuine difference for anyone with allergies or asthma.
Living areas
Living areas depend heavily on how the space actually gets used. A living room with pets or young children generally needs deep cleaning of carpets and upholstery every two to three months, given how much dust, hair, and general activity these spaces absorb. A quieter, less used formal living area might comfortably stretch to twice a year.
Windows and carpets throughout
Windows, both tracks and glass, are easy to neglect because they don’t look obviously dirty from a normal viewing distance, but a proper clean every three to six months keeps tracks from accumulating the kind of grime that eventually becomes much harder to shift. Carpets throughout the home generally benefit from a professional steam clean at least once or twice a year, more often in high traffic households or homes with pets, since regular vacuuming only removes surface debris rather than what’s embedded deeper in the pile.
None of these are rigid rules. A household with pets, young kids, allergies, or simply more foot traffic will need more frequent attention across the board than a quiet, low traffic home. The honest answer is to treat these as a starting guide and adjust based on how your specific home actually behaves.
