It’s a question a lot of households eventually ask, usually right after they start a regular cleaning service and realise they’re spending more than they expected. Does cleaning more often actually save you money, or is fortnightly the smarter choice for most people?

The honest answer is that it depends on your home and your lifestyle. But there’s a way to think through it that goes beyond just comparing the frequency of visits.

The Obvious Cost Difference

If you’re paying, say, $180 per clean, then weekly cleaning costs you roughly $720 a month while fortnightly comes in at $360. On the surface, fortnightly looks like the clear winner.

But that calculation assumes both options produce the same result in terms of your home’s condition. They often don’t.

What Happens in Two Weeks of Normal Use

In a busy household — kids, pets, people who cook regularly, shoes brought in from outside — two weeks is a long time. By the time the cleaners arrive for a fortnightly visit, there’s often significantly more work involved. Bathrooms have more buildup. Kitchen surfaces have more grease. Floors have accumulated more dust and debris.

Many cleaning services price fortnightly visits higher per session than weekly visits for exactly this reason. The per-visit cost goes up because the workload is heavier. When you factor that in, the price gap between weekly and fortnightly narrows more than most people expect.

The ‘Deep Clean Effect’

There’s another factor worth considering: how often your home actually needs a deep clean.

Weekly cleaning keeps your home in a relatively consistent state, which means most visits can be done in a standard timeframe. With fortnightly cleaning, there’s a tendency for buildup to accumulate to the point where some areas need more intensive attention — soap scum in showers, grease on stovetops, dust in corners.

If those areas regularly need extra time, your fortnightly clean might periodically turn into something closer to a deep clean in terms of effort and cost.

What Type of Household Are You?

For a one or two-person household where people are out most of the day, the home doesn’t change much between visits. Fortnightly makes complete sense and genuinely does save money.

For families with children, people who work from home, or households with pets, fortnightly cleaning often means you’re spending the week before the cleaner arrives doing more maintenance cleaning yourself. At that point, you might be putting in several hours of your own time to compensate. Is that time free? Probably not.

Weekly cleaning removes that maintenance burden, which has a value that doesn’t show up in the direct cost comparison.

Where the Real Savings Come From

The cleanest homes from a cost perspective are usually ones where regular maintenance prevents the need for periodic heavy cleaning. If fortnightly visits are working well for you and your home looks good between visits, stick with it. You’re genuinely saving.

If you’re finding that the two weeks between cleans leave your home in a state that stresses you out, or if you’re spending your own weekends cleaning on top of the professional service, weekly might actually be more efficient for your situation.

Ask your cleaning service if they offer both options and whether there’s a price difference per visit. Run the numbers for your specific home size and situation before deciding. The ‘cheaper’ option and the ‘better value’ option aren’t always the same thing.
